BeOS is a lovely little operating system, but the Be company died…
Check out the OpenBeOS Project
Once upon a time (1999-2002) I ran Be5 PE on Dual Celeron 500's on a ABIT BP6 motherboard at home. So folk might find it useful to install the following:
My BP6 CPU Monitor for the ABIT BP6 dual 370-socket motherboard.
An alpha release of a HPT366 driver if you want to get those drives on the ATA-66 bus working… - I admit I only have a CD drive hanging off this bus, but others have claimed that it works for their HDs and are able to boot off it too.
An extremely good tip for getting your PC to run somewhat cooler… Trims 15C off my running temperature!! Local copy of tip:
HLT (halt) instructions are used by good operating systems to keep processors cool - the halt instruction is sent whenever the processor has nothing to do. However, HLT's impact can be unpredictable on multi-processor systems, so Be does not enable the feature by default. If you have a dual-CPU setup and want to give it a shot then:
Open the file:
”~/config/settings/kernel/drivers/kernel”
and add the line:
hlt
Save and reboot. If your machine remains stable, you'll notice your CPU temperature dropping.
